It was the reverse – the Tele Custom has a standard Telecaster bridge, but Plank replaced it with a Humbucker (to serve as a double for the black Telecaster Deluxe). Check Thom’s page to see photos of the conversion, and for more info on the pickups.
Plank never explained what the new bridge is, but it’s a very usual 6 Block Saddle Hardtail bridge. It could be a vintage 70′s one (or one from any time since, as the same is used on the Starcaster, Tele Plus, and others), but it’s probably just something like these or whichever slightly different version Fender was offering at the time. The original Tele Deluxe and Tele Custom don’t have the same number of screws under the saddles (three and four, respectively), so some modification would be necessary even with a vintage bridge.
Ironically, the ‘vintage-style’ hardtail bridges found on ‘72 Telecaster Deluxe Reissue are actually different from the ‘modern-style’ ones actually found on a 1972 Telecaster Deluxe.
