For 15 Step, Ed played the basic notes on the Oscar Schmidt Autoharp, then ran the part into loads of effects to create the completely unique sound heard on the album. Live from 2008-2010, Ed used a BOSS Dr Sample SP303 to trigger samples of those sounds. Note that this is not actually kept on his pedalboard, but he does sometimes place it on top of his volume pedal during performances of the song for ease of use. In 2011, he switched to using his Digitech Whammy, and then also his new Strymon Timeline's Ice setting in 2012, for the part.
