I've read here that Ed creates many of his sounds using many delays stacked on top of each other. Does he set them all to a similar tempo? When I stack my delays I just hear a bunch of random repeats but not 'ethereal' sounds- how does he set them so they are stacked but play so smoothly?

You need to swell into the delays, using a either a volume pedal or your guitar’s volume knob, at least for the initial attack. (Watch this video. He fades in using his volume pedal, then switches to his wah to change the timbre.)

He doesn’t seem to have them all set randomly. Generally if you listen when he stops playing, you should be able to hear the length of the main delay at least in the decays. He also uses slightly different techniques for different songs, some of which feature the delay more prominently than others. If you gave a specific song, I might be able to elaborate better on what exactly he’s doing. That atmospheric post was meant to serve as a general guide from which to work to figure out the nuances inherent to each track.
